Middle School Happenings (02 - 05 - 10)

By Robbie Griffiths
February 08, 2010

This school year is going by incredibly fast.  Progress reports were sent out this past week.  If you haven’t seen your child’s grades, you may want to ask for them.  Basketball season is now officially over.  We have a little over a month before track begins.  Big events coming up include our county spelling bee, parties for Valentine’s Day in K-6, and the 4th-5th grade basketball games next Friday.  Many of us are looking forward to the upcoming three day weekend.  Classes are working hard on formative tests in preparation for state assessments.  As Mr. Vallin would say, busy people are happy people, and we definitely are busy.  For this edition of Middle School Happenings, each class brainstormed topics and then chose which topic they would like to report on.  As always, enjoy the classes’ contributions and Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy President’s Day.

EIGHTH GRADE

County Spelling Bee

This is Jon Meyer and Dallas Stillion in Mrs. Griffiths’ favorite grade, talking about the County Spelling Bee.  Carson Wallace, from the 5th grade, Trey Hall and Camden Cox from the 6th grade, and from the 7th and 8th grades, Brant Cox, Macy Kasson, and Jon Meyer are all going to the County Spelling Bee.  Jon Meyer finished first and Trey Hall finished second in our school spelling bee.  County Spelling Bee should be very exciting.  We Huskies are hoping to have a great victory.  There are lots of tough kids spelling this year.  We hope to see all of you down at the spelling bee in Norton at East Campus.  Well, we have to go now.

Artistic Ability

We are the most artistic people at NVJH.  Every day before a game we show our artistic ability by drawing the opposing team on the board.  We’ve drawn a shorthorn, (our longhorn didn’t turn out so well), a Trojan, and a loper.  We come up with other creative sayings on those days, too.  If you need a laugh, you should call 1-800-WER-COOL.  By: Jordan, Dakota, Hunter, Ian, Aaron, and Alex

Snow

Snow.  I hate snow.  It’s too white and cold.  Every time I see it snowing I want to crawl under my blankets.  There are some advantages to snow, like snow days, which we haven’t had in a long time.  I’ve never played in the snow and don’t wish to either.  Even though we do have snow days, they’re not enjoyable either.  I get so bored that I think I’m going to lose it.  SO, the only thing I have to say to snow is to go back where you came from.  By:  Mike Griffin

New Employees

Over the past couple of weeks our school got two new employees.  One is a para named Maria Barnes and Sommer Yocum is our new school secretary.  They both are very nice and polite.  Mrs. Yocum has very good artistic ability which she is going to use when she helps out with our 8th grade graduation.  Miss Barnes graduated from college and then came to Long Island to take over Mrs. Yocum’s para job.  She lives in Alma, NE.  Shaina Harper left and turned her job over to Mrs. Yocum.  We will miss Shaina but we can always go see her down at the bank.  By:  Kolton and Vanesa

SEVENTH GRADE

Sports

When this school year started, the football team went undefeated, 7-0 and we were league champions.  Then in basketball, we were 6-0 in conference and 11-3 over all.  We have our last game Saturday, the 6th.  It is against Thunder Ridge, and we hope to win.  Even if we lose, which we won’t, we will still be league champions again.  We are looking forward to a great track season.  Go Huskies.  By:  Philip, Phillip, Stewart, Carson, and Kobie

Spelling Bee

Vichyssoise, staphylococci, boutonniere are some of the immense words that we few can spell.  Those few are Brant and Macy, whom next Wednesday will travel to the county spelling bee.  Also, there is another boy named Tommy Hanes, who didn’t make it to county but is still very good at spelling.  In the school spelling bee, Macy took 3rd place, Brant took 4th, and Tommy took 7th.  Spelling is something we are gifted with.  We all have gone to county and Macy has even won it.  This time Northern Valley plans to take the trophy once again.  Brant and Tommy think that Brant will win, but Macy is totally defiant on this matter.  Well, got to go.  See you at county and Tommy will see you at school.  By:  Brant, Macy, and Tommy

GirlsR17; Sports and Cheerleading

You are here with Makayla, Alyssa, and Kortney.  We have a basketball game on Feb. 6th.  People keep doubting us, but we have been working hard.  We think we are going to win.  Even though we are a young team, we are going to go out there, have fun, and beat the Thunder Ridge Longhorns.  Oh-we forgot to mention that we girls would like more school dances.  So could someone please sponsor them?  PPPPLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE.  We hoped you liked our half time dance at the NV vs. Logan game.  Thanks Connie for the pom pom pony tail holders.  Oh, Mrs. Griffiths loves us 7th graders and we’re her favorite class.  Peace Out, and lets rock and roll out of here.

New Employees

What’s up?  This is the awesome group including Tea, Morgan, Destiney, and the only boy, Tony.  We are going to talk about our new para, Miss Barnes, and what happened to our old secretary.  Miss Barnes took over Sommer Yocum’s job as the 7th grade para.  Sommer became our new secretary.  The reason for this happening is because Shaina went to work at the Long Island Bank.  We like the change.  It is also Sommer’s birthday today.  Happy Birthday Sommer!  Miss Barnes’s birthday is May 21st.  We don’t know if we’ll be able to say Happy Birthday to her, so we better do it now.  If we don’t talk to you soon, peace out, and we know you love us.

Other Happenings

Hey readers!  This is Ame and Clint and we’re going to talk about the band/vocal clinics and Scholar’s Bowl.  The vocal clinic is next week in Damar.  After the vocal clinic, we have a dinner and a dance with the other kids in Junior High. The Scholar’s Bowl team is still to be decided.  We are supposed to be going to Stockton to face some good schools in two weeks.  On March 3rd, we go back to Damar for our band clinic.  In the clinics, we sing or play with other schools from our area.  We both play instrument solos and have vocal solos for contest.  Well, that’s all we have to say.  Thanks for reading.  Later!!

Sixth Grade

Music Contest

This is the MC(music contest) rap coming live from Camden, Cody, and Eli.  Now we’re going to tell you a story—about our life in music and band.  We’re going to Logan to music contest—and us plus Trey are doing—an ensemble in band.  We love also doing solos—in music we are singing a few.  Now you’ve listened to the MC rap---word.

Benchmark Bags

This week we did benchmark bags for our literature theme about growing times.  Trey thinks his bag was the best because he freehanded a dragon and a Boise State bronco.  He brought a blanket, a strobe light, and a Jeep blanket.  Everybody brought valued items from their childhood.  Dalton brought a truck, tractor, football player, and pictures.  Colton and Jesse just brought pictures for their benchmark bags.  By:  Jesse, Dalton, Trey, and Colton

Valentine's Day

I wonder who will be our Valentine.  Vanessa wants Talia, Allison wants Brianna, and Shayna wants Brooke.  We are all girls in our group if you didn’t know.  We are writing about Valentine’s Day.  This year is our last time having a party at school.  We have to make our boxes and bring to school.  We all love Valentine’s Day and Allison especially likes the candy.  You are speaking to the Lil’ Cupids Lil’ Wayne's sisters' ;word.

Grades

Most people got good grades and some people didn’t do so well.  There were a lot of A’s and B’s.  If we got our grades signed in Mrs. Griffiths’s class, we got candy or 5 points.  Most of the people chose candy instead of the 5 points.  Our benchmark bag was a grade, too.  It was worth 10 points.  By:  Skylar and Matt

GirlsR17; Sports
Hi, this is the sporty girls:  Elexsa A. #5, Kirsten B. # 15, and Sarah B. #34.  We won against Quinter, but now we have to go and beat Thunder Ridge so we can get the third plaque.  Boys are playing for first place against Thunder Ridge.  They have a lot of tall people, but we are still hoping to win.   A-team girls are going to go out and play their hardest.  The game got postponed on Thursday so we’re going to have it this Saturday, Feb. 6th.  We would like a lot of people to support our team.
