The junior Lady Huskies had a good night of offensive ball movement, defensive communication, great shots, and overall teamwork. It’s been a long season of working on fundamentals and the girls finally saw some of their hard work pay off. Annika McKinney had a great night leading the team with 11 points and 7 rebounds followed by Cambrie Sproul with 9 points. Ryelyn Cox contributed with 6 points and 7 rebounds.

B game The Northern Valley JH Huskies B team captured a 22-14 victory over Paradise on Thursday in Almena. Westyn Lowry led Northern Valley JH Huskies B in scoring with eight points. The Huskies pressured the ball all game, collecting 20 steals. Max Wilder led the team with eight steals. Colton Ledbetter helped facilitate the offense with 3 assists in the game. Additional scorers for Northern Valley JH Huskies B included Max Wilder (6 points), Colton Ledbetter (2 points), Asher Van Patten (2 points), Cruz Van Patten (2 points), and Jaden Johns (2 points). The B team is now 2-5 on the season. A game The Northern Valley JH Huskies A team defeated Paradise, 24-18, on Thursday in Almena to secure their first win of the season. The Huskies trailed 14-10 at halftime before coming back for the victory. They capped it off with a strong 4th quarter, outscoring Paradise 8-0. Aaron Horacek scored 12 points to lead the way for the Huskies. Bryson Wilder also had a great game, leading the team in rebounds (8), assists (4), and steals (3). Also contributing in the scoring column for the Huskies were Colt Rogers (6 points), Bryson Wilder (2 points), Cash Compton (2 points), and Levi Black (2 points). The A team is now 1-8 on the season. Northern Valley hosts Tri-Plains/Brewster in Almena on Thursday for their next game. Comments from Coach Max Boehler: Thursday was a fun night for our boys and girls. It was the first time this year that all of our teams captured in a win in the same day. The fans and high school students did an awesome job creating an exciting atmosphere for us, and we are very grateful for that. The B team had a great team victory, with all players getting several minutes of playing time, and the contributions being spread out pretty evenly throughout the team. It is good to see them really get more comfortable playing the game and becoming more confident and aggressive. I was proud of the A team for sticking with it and getting a hard nosed come from behind victory for the 1st win of the season. It would have been easy for them to lose faith when they were down early, as we have spent the majority of our season playing from behind and losing games, but they did not. I have been preaching the importance of taking care of the ball to them all season, and it has been great to see them start to improve in that part of their game over the past couple weeks. Two of the 8th graders scored their first points of the season in this one, while two more (Bryson Wilder and Aaron Horacek) played the biggest parts in the victory. I was happy to see the hard work and leadership that the 8th grade class has put into this team pay off. We will see if we can build on this win and finish our season with continued growth and improvement over the next few weeks.

Northern Valley Middle School Girls Basketball Vs. Heartland Christian and Christian Family Educators at Colby January 16, 2025 NV A-Team Girls (0 - 8) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley 6 8 12 18 Heartland Christian 8 11 13 20 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 8 Cambrie Sproul – 2 Kaylee Miller – 2 Inez Schemper – 6 NV B-Team Girls (3 - 3) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley - 0 2 10 Christian Family Educators (CFE) - 8 12 12 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 2 Tayah Seeders – 1 Avreigh McCue – 4 Annika McKinney – 3 Inez Schemper – 2 Coach Lowry’s Comments – The Northern Valley Junior High girls traveled to Colby, KS, to compete against the Heartland Christian Crusaders and Christian Family Educator Falcons. The A-team girls came out ready to work. We had good ball movement and our passes are improving. Every girl that played had at least one rebound and all but one had shot attempts. This means we are getting more aggressive but just couldn’t quite get the win, losing by 2 points. Ryelyn Cox led the team with 8 points followed by Inez Schemper with 6 and Annika McKinney led the team with 11 rebounds. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls struggled through the first two quarters to pace out the scrappiness of the CFE Falcons. In the last quarter they were able to anticipate movement better and make a good game of it. Annika McKinney led the team with 4 point

B Game The Northern Valley JH Boys B team fell, 18-8, to CFE Falcons on Thursday in Colby, KS. Asher Van Patten, Cruz Van Patten, Jaden Johns, and Westyn Lowry each scored two points to lead Northern Valley JH Huskies B. Asher Van Patten collected six rebounds to lead the team. Asher Van Patten and Colton Ledbetter also each had 2 steals for the Huskies. The B team is now 1-5 on the season. A Game The Northern Valley JH Boys A team mounted a comeback after falling behind by as many as 10 points, but they still lost to Heartland Christian, 26-20, on Thursday in Colby, KS. Bryson Wilder had a strong outing with 10 points for the Huskies in the loss. Bryson Wilder and Max Wilder each collected six rebounds to lead Northern Valley on the glass. Cash Compton added 3 steals and 2 assists in the game. The A team is now 0-8 on the season. Comments from Coach Boehler: The B team didn't have a great night, it just seemed like they weren't able to get any shots to fall. If they were able to get past the initial pressure though, they ran the offense decently well which was encouraging. We just have to get better at keeping our eyes up and seeing the open man. The A team had some positives despite another loss. We accomplished our goal of having under 20 turnovers in a game. We matched our season high in scoring with 20 points. The players also showed off how hard they have been working on their conditioning, as we pressed the entire game and a couple of players never even subbed out. They were able to force a handful of turnovers in the press as well, we just need to get better at turning those forced turnovers into easy baskets for us. The Huskies will host Paradise in Almena on Thursday for their next game.

B Game The Northern Valley boys B team lost a close game to Logan/Palco, 21-18, on Thursday in Almena. Colt Rogers had a strong outing with 12 points for the Huskies in the loss. Westyn Lowry collected five boards to lead the Huskies on the glass. Colton Ledbetter (2 points), Cruz Van Patten (2 points), and Max Wilder (2 points) also contributed in the scoring column. A Game The Northern Valley boys A team couldn't keep up with Logan/Palco, 41-10, on Thursday in Almena. Bryson Wilder led the team in scoring and rebounding with 5 points and 6 rebounds in the contest. Colt Rogers (4 points) and Aaron Horacek (1 point) also pitched in for Northern Valley. Comments from Coach Boehler: Colt Rogers did a good job making shots in the B game to help the offense. The B boys also showed a lot of growth in their man-to-man defense and had a chance to experience some late close game scenarios which was good for them. The A team forced some turnovers with their press defense in the 1st half which was a positive. The effort was there, but we again struggled with taking care of the ball, getting back on defense, and had some silly frustration fouls at times that should have been avoided.

Northern Valley vs Cheylin Cougars - January 10, 2025 Coach Cole; JUNIOR VARSITY - The Huskies JV team had a true JV game on Friday as Cheylin suited up all Non-Varsity starters, so I did the same. The Huskies starters were Conner, Maverick, Clay, Caden, and Ayden. In the 2 Quarter contest, the Huskies ran zone offense against the Cougars JV 2-3 zone, as Clay Van Patten made 2 three pointers. The Huskies JV ran man-to-man defense the entire contest and did well playing the help side. Varsity starters, Tait, Lucas, and Zane would play to help the JV team secure the win. The ending was close as the Cougars hit a three pointer, forced a restraining line violation from NV, and got an offensive rebound on a free throw miss, but fortunately missed the game tying block shot to force OT. Scoring for the Huskies JV went as follows: Van Patten 6, Hansen 6, David 3, Thalheim 3, Lowry 2, Brown 2. Ending score was 22 - 20. VARSITY - The Huskies varsity team started out strong on Friday as the end of the first quarter ended 13 - 10, with Owen Hammond hitting a 3 pointer as the buzzer. The Cougars would go on a scoring bout with 18 in the second quarter, as the Huskies started to turn the ball over and miss multiple shots, only scoring 8 points. Half time score was 21 - 28. The 3rd quarter would be the same story as the Cougars would shoot exceptionally from the three point line, scoring 21 in the quarter, the Huskies would score 9 points. Owen Hammond had 22 of the Huskies 30 points in the first three quarters. In the fourth, the Huskies would sport an extended 1-3-1 trapping on the wings and corners and would force a couple turnovers and dive for loose balls, but it would be too little too late. The final score 40 - 65. The Huskies go to (3-6) and the Cougars to (5-3). Owen Hammond had a career night scoring 25 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and shooting 50% 4/8 from the three point line. If the young Huskies team want to stay in games and potentially win, they have to produce in other ways. Rebounding, pressure defense, getting teammates open to shoot, diving for loose balls, not making silly mistakes, taking care of the ball, and playing hard for 32 minutes. Simply put, the intensity needs to pick up in order to win. The WKLL Standings are as follows: 1. Logan/Palco: 8 - 0 2. Weskan: 8 - 0 3. Cheylin: 5 - 3 4. Western Plains: 4 - 2 5. Wheatland/Grinnell: 3 - 5 6. Golden Plains: 3 - 5 7. Northern Valley: 3 - 6 8. Tri-Plains/Brewster: 0 - 6

The junior Lady Huskies have not broken their losing streak yet but continue to improve. Our defensive awareness and hustle continue to get better. Offensively we are penetrating the lane more but shots just aren’t falling. Annika McKinney led in rebounds with 9 followed by Inez Schemper with 7. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls took this week’s goal of driving to the lane to heart and worked hard at taking good shots. They were willing to try something new by pushing the ball and it paid off for them. Avriegh McCue led the team in scoring with 4 points, 8 out of the 9 girls got at least one rebound and Rowan Bremer led with 3 blocks.

We have not broken our losing streak yet, but we continue to see improvements elsewhere. With 37 shot opportunities and 22 rebounds we could not get the shots to fall in, but defensively we had better position and maintained more control. Offensively we moved the ball better and our hustle back has improved. We will continue to work on scoring. Ryelyn Cox led the team with 4 points and Annika McKinney led with 8 rebounds. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls stepped up their game on defense and were willing to take more shots earning them their second win of the season. I appreciated their hustle and it was fun to watch them earn a win in overtime. Three girls contributed to the scoring and Rowan Bremer led with rebounds.

B Team The Northern Valley JH Huskies B Team defeated Golden Plains 4-0 in 2 quarters on Monday night in Rexford. The game was tied at zero after the 1st quarter before the Huskies pulled out the victory in the second quarter. Colton Ledbetter and Victor Alvarez-Santos led Northern Valley JH Huskies B in scoring with two points each. Ledbetter also secured 3 steals in the game. A Team The Northern Valley JH Huskies A Team loses to Golden Plains 10-40. Aaron Horacek and Colt Rogers led Northern Valley in scoring with four points each. Bryson Wilder also contributed in scoring for the Huskies scoring two points. Cash Compton led the Huskies in rebounding with 5, and also led the team with 2 assists. Comments from Coach Boehler: It was fun to see the B team get their first win of the season. They played solid team defense, and Colton Ledbetter was tenacious with 3 steals and even forced a 10 second violation by himself at one point. The A team didn't have a great night. We seemed to forget some of the principles of our zone defense, and we still need to improve quite a bit at taking care of the ball to give ourselves a chance. We don't play again for a few weeks so we will use this break as a time to re-evaluate and maybe try some new options.

NVJH Boys Basketball vs Thunder Ridge 12-12-24 The Northern Valley Boys took on the Thunder Ridge Longhorns on December 12th with a full 4 quarter B game and as well as the A game. The Huskies played by far their best games in both contests, however, were unable to secure their first victories of the season. The Huskies fell in the B game 23-27. The Huskies utilized a 2-3 zone to try and keep the much larger Longhorns out of the paint and did the best they have all year with shifting in the zone and preventing easy baskets. On the offensive side, Colt Rogers led the way with 12 points in his 2 quarters of action. Several other Huskies scored in the game and showed growth in passing, cutting, and operating the offense. Cruz Van Patten had 4 points, Colton Ledbetter, Victor Alvarez-Santos, and Jaden Johns all had 2 points apiece and Westyn Lowry had one point. In the A game, the Huskies again faced a much taller team in the Longhorns, outside of the Huskies’ Aaron Horacek. The Huskies attempted to isolate Horacek in one-on-one matchups down low and did a great job of getting the ball inside rather than force up contested shots. It was a great sign of growth to take the matchup and force the Longhorns to collapse onto the 6’3” post opening other players. Unfortunately, the Huskies struggled shooting from all ranges on the court despite getting good looks. The Huskies did play by far the best defense of the year in a 2-3 zone against the lengthy Longhorns. While the Huskies would lose the contest 14-29, it was by far the best the team has looked in terms of defense, patience with the offense, smart passing, and taking the right matchups as they presented themselves. Bryson Wilder led the Huskies with 8 points followed by Aaron Horacek with 4 and Colt Rogers with 2 points. A Team Points- Bryson Wilder- 8 Aaron Horacek- 4 Colt Rogers- 2 Rebounds- Aaron Horacek- 11 Bryson Wilder- 4 Colt Rogers- 3 Levi Black- 2 Max Wilder- 2 Steals- Bryson Wilder- 4 Colt Rogers- 2
