
Northern Valley Junior High Boys Track
On April 11 the Northern Valley Track team traveled to Oberlin to compete in a Quadrangular meet with Oberlin, Greeley County and Wallace County. It was a hot, windy day against good competition.
The Husky boys placed fourth in the meet. NV won 1 st place in two relay races. Lucas Hansen placed 2 nd in the triple jump, Peter Towne placed 3 rd in the two mile and Tait Thalheim placed 3 rd in the pole vault.

The Earth Science class went to Cloud County Community College in Concordia to learn about wind power, solar power, and drone technology. The class learned about college courses, career opportunities, basics of the industries and the future of renewable energies.

Northern Valley High School Track & Field
On April 6th the Northern Valley High School Track & Field team traveled to Norton for their first track meet of the season. A total of ten teams competed at the Norton Invitational.
The NV Girls placed 8th scoring 17 points as a team. Bringing home medals were Mary Baird
with 3rd place in the high jump and Audrey Bina with 1st in the triple jump. Audrey jumped 33-10.5
inches breaking the school records set by Kortney Cunningham of 33-9.75 in 2013.
The NV Boys came home with 6
th place scoring 60 points as a team. Bringing home medals
were Brian Bencomo in the 400m placing 1st, Kenton Thalheim with 1st in the 800m and 2nd in the
pole vault, Gabriel Rudd in long jump with 3rd
, and the 4x400m Relay team with 2nd ran by Brian
Bencomo, Owen Hammond, Gabriel Rudd, and Kenton Thalheim.
Coach Hansen, “Even though we were nursing some injuries, as a team, the athletes performed
well for our first track meet. I am looking forward to what we can accomplish in the rest of this
season. Great job to all of the athletes and for Audrey Bina to break a school record on her first jump
of her first high school track meet is exciting.”
The Huskies will travel to Colby for the Triplains meet on Tuesday and on Friday to Hill City.

The Northern Valley Husky golf team traveled to Smith Center for their first meet of the season on 4/4. There were 8 schools at the meet and 41 total golfers. The Huskies are much less experienced this season than last season but did well considering the weather and the early spring course conditions. Foster Brands led the way for the Huskies finishing with a 102 in 15th place. Jason Cox ended the day with a 111 in 23rd, Robert Vsetecka shot a 120 in 30th, Peyton David shot a 142 in 38th, and Deacon Schemper shot a 146 in 40th.
The Varsity squad will head to Osborne and the JV golfers will get their first action in Grinnell both on Tuesday April 11th.



Northern Valley Junior High Boys Track
On April 6 the Northern Valley Junior High boys traveled to Norton for their first track meet of
the season. Ten schools competed in the always competitive Norton Invitational.
The NV 6 th & 7 th boys did well placing 5 th as a team scoring 52 points. The Huskies won four
medals on the day. Tait Thalheim won the gold medal in the pole vault. Thalheim, Hansen, Compton
and McKinney also won the gold medal in the 4x200 relay. Griffin McKinney threw well in the shot
placing second and Lucas Hansen ran hard in the 200 placing third.
The two NV 8 th grade boys competed hard on the day. Wyatt Compton placed 4 th in the 100
Hurdles. The Huskies have two meets next week at Oberlin and Stockton.

Northern Valley Middle School Girls Track
The Northern Valley Middle School girls traveled to Norton for their first track meet of the season. It
was a mild day of weather for the ten schools competing at the Norton Invitational.
The NV 6/7 th grade girls placed 7 th as a team with a score of 35 points. Haedyn Cox had a good day
winning two medals, gold in the high jump and bronze in the pole vault, as well as placing fourth in the
100 meter hurdles and fifth in the 200 meter hurdles. Rene Horacek started her season well placing
fourth in both the discus and the long jump.
The NV 8 th grade girls placed 8 th as a team with a score of 19 points. Jordyn Cox won two bronze medals
in both the pole vault and the 800 meter race.

Northern Valley High School hosted the WKLL Forensics Meet on April 5th! Northern Valley had 7 students participate. Freshman Clay VanPatten, Ayden Keith, and Gavin Thalheim. Sophomores Caden Lowry and Wendy Adams. Seniors Kai Cox and Angel Joppa.
Everybody performed amazingly! Angel Joppa and Wendy Adams broke finals with their duet and took 6th for the whole meet. Kai Cox and Gavin Thalheim broke finals and took first for the meet with their IDA. Kai Cox also broke finals in his Serious Solo and took first for the meet.
Great job to all of the team!! Also to all of the teams we had in attendance on the 5th in Almena!!! Next, some of us head to Wakeeney. If they do not participate in that meet, next is State in Hutchinson!!!


On April 1,2023 the Northern Valley High School Forensics team traveled to Rexford. We took 3 students. Two freshman, Clay VanPatten and Ayden Keith and Sophomore, Caden Lowry. Clay and Ayden had an IDA. Clay also had an informative speech. Caden was triple entered. He did a prose, impromptu and extemporaneous.
All three boys broke finals!!! Clay and Ayden in IDA they took 7th for the meet. Caden broke extemporaneous and took 6th. Awesome job boys!!
Next up, League in Almena on April 5th!!!!!


The Senior Class took a trip with Mr. Pugh and Mrs. Lowry to Topeka for two days. The class stopped for a quick picture at the World's Largest Ball of Twine, then continued on to the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, enjoyed shopping in Topeka before eating at Texas Roadhouse, and enjoyed the hotel pool and a movie all on Thursday. Friday, the class visited the Capitol and went all the way to the top of the dome. They then ventured to the Brown v. Board of Education Museum before playing some putt-putt golf and enjoying some more shopping before heading back home. It was a great couple of days with a great group of students!

Class 1A through 5A high school seniors were invited to participate in the annual CK Basketball Tournament, which highlights the skills and careers of outstanding student-athletes throughout Kansas. Three local Northwest Kansas student-athletes participated in the 2023 Central Kansas (CK) High School All-Star Basketball Classic, held on the campus of Barton Community College - Sunday, March 26th.
Phillipsburg High School Seniors Taryn Sides and Heather Schemper played for Phillipsburg Panther Head Coach Rachel Miller - who guided the Girls' North CK Team. Taryn Sides scored a triple-double, earned the North Team's Most Valuable Player (M.V.P.) award, and won the girl's three-point competition. Heather Schemper scored points in the paint for her North Team, as well.
Foster Brands, Northern Valley High School Senior, also participated in the Central Kansas (CK) Basketball Tournament. Brands played on the CK Boys' West Team - coached by Trey O'Neil. O'Neil is the Head Coach of the Hugoton High School Boys' Basketball squad - which just won the Class 4A Boys' State Basketball title. Foster Brands scored points in the paint and was 100 percent from the free-throw line for the West Team. The West Team won the CK Boys' Tournament by a score of 105-95.


On March 28th the Northern Valley High School forensics team traveled to Phillipsburg for a forensics meet. We took 5 students. Kai Cox (Senior), Caden Lowry (Sophomore), Ayden Keith (Freshman), Clay VanPatten (Freshman) and Gavin Thalheim (Freshman). Kai and Gavin had an IDA, Kai had a serious solo, Ayden and Clay had an IDA, Clay had an informative speech, Caden had a prose and did impromptu.
Gavin and Kai came out with first place for the ENTIRE meet!!! CONGRATS BOYS!!! Kai also broke finals with his serious solo and placed 6th for the entire meet. CONGRATS to ALL! We have seen much improvement and this was a huge challenge as this was the biggest meet Phillipsburg has ever hosted.
We head to Golden Plains High School on Saturday for a meet. Then, on April 5th we host the WKLL Tournament in Almena! After that, we will start preparing for state!
