Stage Curtain Fundraiser
The Long Island Middle School is fundraising to replace stage curtains that are more than 70 years old and have the scars to prove it. With a grant from the Phillips County Community Foundation and funding from the Dane G. Hansen Museum, we are just over halfway there! To help us reach our goal of $6,000 and have new curtains hanging before the 8th Grade Graduation in May 2025, please send donations to the Northern Valley Middle School (PO Box 90/ Long Island, KS 67647 Attn: Emily Lowry).
The Northern Valley FFA Chapter traveled to Bird City on Monday to Dairy Cattle Judging. The team placed 14th overall. We are very proud of them. Excited to see what the rest of the year brings!
The Northern Valley Junior Huskies took on the Wheatland Grinnell Thunderhawks on Sept. 5th for the season opener in Long Island. The Junior Huskies held strong for the first quarter and then the Thunderhawks took control of the game going into half time leading the Huskies 40- 12. The Huskies held on and did some good things in the second half to bring the final score to 60-25 in favor of the Thunderhawks. The Huskies will head to Bird City to play Cheylin in a flag football game on Sept. 12th due to Cheylin’s low numbers in 7th/8th grade.

The Lady Huskies continued their season this week traveling to Wheatland to play The Cheylin Cougars and the Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks on September 3rd and then hosting a home game on September 5th against the Plainville Cardinals and the Thunder Ridge Longhorns.
The Huskies started Tuesday off strong beating Cheylin in the first match of the night 25-20 but could not maintain the momentum losing the second and third sets, 20-25, 17-25. The Huskies struggled against Wheatland Grinnell's aggressive net play losing 13-25, 20-25. Coach Hansen said, "The girls struggled tonight to find their confidence. We had moments of strong offensive and defensive sets but just could not put it all together."

During Thursday night's home game the Lady Huskies came out solid in their first set against Plainville winning the first set 25-17. The Huskies lost the second and third sets 23-25, 25-27 walking away knowing they could have done better. The Lady Huskies faced Thunder Ridge in the final game of the night coming away with their first win of the season, 25-11, 25-15. "The JV girls played with more confidence against Wheatland-Grinnell for their third games of the season on Tuesday night. As a team they adjusted better and worked hard to find a rhythm but couldn't quite pull off a win." said Coach Lowry. The JV Huskies fell to the Thunderhawks 19-25, 16-25.
Thursday night the JV lost against Plainville 7-25, 17-25 but came back against the Thunderhawk JV winning a close game, 25-22, 25-21. Coach Lowry said, "The NV JV girls started the night against Plainville struggling in the first set but finding a little more rhythm in the second set. In our second match against Thunder Ridge the girls hustled, worked together and communicated on the floor taking their second win of the season. It was fun to watch the transition from the first game to the second."
The Huskies will travel to Alma on the 10th to play Alma and Wilcox.

The Lady Huskies kicked off their 2024 Volleyball season Friday night against the St Francis Indians and the Cheylin Cougars. The Lady Huskies, returning only two varsity starters this year, fought hard both games as a team.
The Huskies fell to St Francis 7-25 the first set but got their nerves out and came back to win the second set 25-22. The final set was a battle all the way to the end with the Huskies falling 23-25. The Huskies ended their night against Cheylin winning the first set 25-17. Unfortunately the Cougars defeated the Huskies in set two 21-25 and set three 18-25.
Coach Hansen quote, “We knew coming into tonight that these games were to see where we needed to focus. This group of girls have a lot of heart and they do not give up on anything. They played well together, showing a lot of potential for the season. Grit, Resilience, & Determination are some of the focuses for this season and we are excited to see where the season will take us. We will learn from these losses and put the work in to get better.”

The JV got to see some successful court playing time beating St. Francis 25-22 both sets. The second game against Cheylin proved to be a tougher game with the Huskies falling 19-25, 12-25.
Coach Lowry said, "The NV girls worked hard to figure out their offense in the first game of the season. It was a fun win against St Francis but the girls felt a little more competition with Cheylin. We have a lot of work to do but I'm proud of that they accomplished.”
The Huskies will travel to Wheatland on the 3rd to play Wheatland-Grinnell and Cheylin followed by another home game on the 5th against Thunder Ridge and Plainville.

Today the Northern Valley 1st and 2nd grade classes got to learn about auctioneers and what they do. They got to participate in their very own live auction. They got to bid on fun size Reese or 3 Musketeers. The cheapest one sold for $54 and the most expensive went for $50,000. Thank you so much to Mrs. Knuths friend Clay Patton at Marshall Auction.
The Northern Valley Junior High football squad has been working hard through the heat to prepare for the season opener! There are 7 7th and 8th graders that will be playing and 5 6th graders learning in practice. The season kicks off September 5th at 6 pm following the volleyball games in Long Island!
